Skamol materials in Continuous Caster Tundish linings
To protect the steel shell around the tundish and to obtain the right temperature for steel before casting, the tundish is lined by refractory and insulating materials.
The refractories are often wear-resistant MgO castables or precast called sliting plates. The preferred insulating materials must be able to resist the high intermediate temperatures in the tundish and a relatively high compressive force.
Dense vermiculite boards of bulk density between 600 and 1500 kg/m3 can be applied in this position. e.g. Skamol V-1100 (600), Skamol V-1100 (700) or Skamol VIP-12 HS.
Basic principle of continuous casting:
Benefits by implementing V-1100 (600), Skamol V-1100 (700) or
Skamol VIP-12 HS in the tundish linings:
- Slimmer refractory lining
- Reduced heat flow
- Lower shell temperature
- Safer casting
- More even temperature of steel supplied at the caster mould
