Rotary kilns face immense pressure and wear from extreme temperatures, heavy loads and expansion of the refractory lining during production. Risks include deformation of the steel shell, and poor insulation or the wrong combination of materials can lead to a decrease in product quality, as well as costly maintenance and waste of energy.
Skamol has developed the M-EXTRA moler brick for back-up insulation in rotary kilns. M-EXTRA is specifically designed to provide the kiln with an excellent insulating lining, while at the same time being able to resist the extreme conditions inside the kiln. Some of the benefits of M-EXTRA include:
Reduced heat loss and energy consumption.
Decreased deterioration of mechanical parts.
Reduced costs of relining and production down-time.
By using M-EXTRA as back-up insulation, the life span of the rotary kiln can be greatly increased. M-EXTRA is highly resistant to alkali attacks, providing a protective shield for the mechanical parts and steel shell. The brick structure even increases in strength up to 900° C, giving the kiln increased resistance to the pressure of the expanding refractory lining and thereby also lowering the risk of shell deformation.
Besides providing a protective shield, M-EXTRA maintains its insulation properties in service temperatures up to 1000° C, which has been documented to reduce energy consumption with up to 50 %. Use our Heat Transfer Calculator to find out how M-EXTRA can reduce costs in your specific rotary kiln.

M-EXTRA has a low thermal conductivity, which ensures a lower external heat loss and gives a large energy reduction compared to an uninsulated kiln. A low external heat loss also has the consequence that the shell temperature drops, thereby ensuring the shell condition and alignment. A further advantage is that the effect of adverse weather conditions is minimised.
