The challenges of rotary kiln insulation in iron and steel making

Rotary kilns set high demands for back-up insulation systems in steel plants. Production faces costly maintenance and decreased service hours, as a result of the extreme conditions inside the kiln. Some of the challenges include damage to the steel shell and unstable thermal conditions inside the kiln.

Improve rotary kiln performance with our back-up insulation systems

Skamol offers SkamoSteel M-Extra moler bricks as a back-up insulation system in rotary kilns. SkamoSteel M-Extra is designed through careful field-testing, showing the bricks excellent insulation properties combined with exceptional strength. This provide our customers with the following benefits:

  • Reduced thermal loss and energy consumption
  • Decreased deterioration of mechanical parts
  • Reduced costs of relining and production downtime
  • Lower risk of shell deformation

Save up to 50% on energy consumption in rotary kilns with our insulation system

By using SkamoSteel M-Extra it is possible to significantly increase the life span of the rotary kiln and save energy at the same time. By maintaining its insulation properties in service temperatures up to 1,000°C, SkamoSteel M-Extra is documented to reduce energy consumption with up to 50%!

Stronger and better durability with our SkamoSteel M-Extra

SkamoSteel M-Extra’s material composition makes it resistant to alkali attacks, which shields the mechanical parts and steel shell of the kiln. The brick's structure increases in strength in temperatures up to 900°C, which gives the kiln increased resistance to the pressure of the expanding refractory lining, thereby also lowering risk of shell deformation.
